“While exact numbers are unavailable, the police are concerned about the increase in crimes at such estates including Geylang East, Ubi, Depot Lane, Defu Lane, Woodlands Terrace and Bukit Batok St 23.” (The Straits Times, 20th April 2009 – see article).
According to Ms Jaslyn Yu, an executive at Chin Hee Works in Defu Lane. which was broken into two months ago, she felt that with the current tough economic times, people are getting more desparate. She said “Maybe more are out of jobs and so resort to theft. We are worried especially during long weekends when the estate is so quiet.”
So what can be done to deter and detect crimes? Installing a burglar alarm system is one good way to deter and detect crimes. A burglar alarm system on activation will sound a siren, attract attention and cause the burglar to cut short the time he spent at your premises. In addtion, if it is either linked to a central monitoring company or to your handphone, it can notified you of an alarm and activate the police.
