Why I don’t need a burglar alarm system?

Reason 5: I have insurance

While an insurance policy can help pay for the replacement of items lost in a burglary, not all items can be easily replaced. Some items have emotional significance, others may have historical value. Such items are irreplaceable and no amount of money can buy them back once they are gone.

I have a friend who lost a laptop and even though he was compensated and could buy a laptop many times better than the one he lost, the data and information that he had accumulated and stored in the laptop was irreplaceable and unrecoverable. Gone with the laptop were the many photos he stored digitally, as well as contact lists and details of customers and clients.

So having an insurance is not sufficient. Having a system that deter the crime is a better insurance.

Why I don’t need a burglar alarm system?

Reason 4: I have a dog

A dog is a man’s best friend and can be depended on for company and loyalty. Depending on the breed, some dogs make good guard dogs, and have been extensively trained and used with the police force. Even cute adorable small little dogs can play their part in alerting you to intruders or strangers at the door. So they can be a deterrent to crime.

The only problem is communication. While your dog may bark when it detects a intruder, it may also bark when neigbours walk pass your house. It may also bark at other dogs, cats and animals near its vicinity or it may bark for whatever makes it wants to bark. So it may leave you clueless, and in some cases, quite frustrated with the incessant noise.

An alarm system gives you accurate information and can pinpoint where the breach is – whether it is a window on the 2nd floor or your kitchen door. In addition, you can program the system to notify others of an intrusion. An alarm system connected to a Central Alarm Monitoring Centre gives you the added advantage that help will be summoned.

Reason 3: Our neighbours will call the police if they see a suspicious person lurking in the neighbourhood.

While it is great to live in a neigbhourhood where everyone knows everyone and will help watch over each other’s house, there is always that possiblilty of a burglar striking when the neighbours are sleeping or away. Even if they are not sleeping, just how does a suspicious person looked like?

Afterall burglars do not wear black masks, black gloves nor carry a black sack. Some burglars looked very smart, very decent and they can pass themselves off as a relative and in some cases as a technician, servicing the phone or whatever utilities is convenient.

Recently we saw the arrest of terrorist Mas Selamat in Johor, Malaysia. What was interesting is that he managed to stay in a village undetected for a full year, despite the publicity and posters on both side of the causeway. So can we really tell a burglar from a stranger?

I guess we can if we hang around long enough to see what the person is up to. But a cursory look at a stranger walking pass your door step may not be enough to alert you to a potential burglary.

Why I don’t need a burglar alarm system?

Reason 2: There is always someone home
Some people I talked to felt that it is unnecessary to install an alarm system because there is always someone at home. Whether it is their domestic helper, a stay home mom or a grand parent, the house is never empty and that is as good a deterrence for burglars.

While there is truth in that, since burglars would prefer to slip in and out without attracting any attention, it also present a danger to whoever is in, should a burglar strike. Burglars do not only break into vacant homes nor do they only strike at night. There are many reported cases of burglars striking in the afternoon or when the loved ones are either busy or taking an afternoon nap.

I do not know about you, but I would rather a burglar strike my house when my wife and children is not in. I dare not imagine what will happen or what the burglar might do to my family. And what if the burglar is in no rush since he knows there is no help on the way.

An alarm system that is armed even when someone is in, can activate a siren, attract attention and notified the police. Knowing that help is on the way is comforting for the family. For the burglar, it will probably caused him to shorten his stay, sparing my family from the traumatic ordeal.

Why I don’t need a burglar alarm system?

Reason 1: I have nothing valuable to steal
For many of us, we do not keep money or jewellry in our homes or offices. Most of our money are in the bank and if we have any expensive exquisite jewellery, we would probably have left them at the safe deposit boxes. So we probably do not see why any burglar would be interested in targetting us. Afterall, we may reasoned, we are ordinary people living in public housing, not like the rich and famous, living in their multimillion-dollars houses, apartments and bungalows. If anyone should install a system, they should. Not us. Afterall we really have nothing valuable to steal.

This is of course a fallacy. The problem lies in the fact that we don’t quite understand the psychology of burglars and the real cost of burgary.

Most burglars are opportunists. They chanced on an open window, a slightly ajar door, an isolated quiet spot and then and there decided to make the best use of the opportunity. They may not have made elaborate plans nor have sophisticated equipment, unlike what we see in movies. For the more prepared, they may have done some homework, surveyed the area and then wait for the opportunity when there is no one watching.

What they are after, very often is not the expensive paintings, nor your high priced LCD TVs or collector’s items, but the more mundane cash (whether it is $50 or $100), jewellery, watches and mobile phones. These are easier to carry and easier to offload. So while you may not have anything really valuable, you may have alot of stuff that although low in value, but are very portable, and easily convertible to cash.

Think about the group of criminals going around the carparks, smashing the windscreens, to steal Cash Cards from the ERP IU, and you will better appreciate what I am talking about. They could have stolen the cars but instead, they opted for cash cards that may be cash value less than $10. Replacing the broken windscreen cost more than the money in the cash card.

Which brings us to the actual cost of burglary. While the burglars may make away with a couple of hundreds, the real cost to the victim far exceed that couple of hundred. I have a friend who was living alone in a 3 room flat in Tampines. She is single and as part of her job, she travels extensively. She returned home after an assignment, to find the house broken into, her safe forced opened. She lost over $2,000 , and some jewellery her mom left for her safe keeping.

A month later, she sold the house, and moved back with her mom. The reason? She couldn’t sleep at nights, worried that the burglar might come back.

You see, burglars do not just steal your money and possession, they robbed us of our Peace of Mind. Your home should be a place where you can feel safe, you can feel secure. But once violated, it is hard to get back that same feeling of safety and security.

So how valuable is your Peace of Mind? How valuable is the simple knowledge that your house is a home, your family and loved ones are safe and secure? How valuable is peaceful restful sleep?

With people getting desperate amid an economic crisis and a rising crime rate, does it necessary means that you will take the proactive step of installing an alarm system? The answer is unfortunately NO!

Burglar alarm system is very much like insurance. Many people don’t see it as a high priority need. They don’t need it the way they need food, water or other daily conveniences like mobile phones, holidays or new clothes.

Hence nobody wake up one fine morning and suddenly decide to install an alarm system. What typically happens is some intervening events, be it a burglary in the neighbourhood or his home, to start him thinking and deciding to install one.

I have been to homes and offices which had been broken into, where my challenge lies not in explaining why they need the system, but why we can’t install immediately. Such was their sense of urgency.

What a contrast to the normal experience where even after we had spent much time explaining and discussing the benefits and why they should act, the client normally will still want to think about it. I have met a client who thought nothing about spending tens of thousands on chandeliers and lighting, but hesitated and thought long and hard about installing an alarm system.

So I thought it would be intesting to share the top 10 reasons people gave on why they don’t need an alarm system.

Watch for it…

Crimes seem to be on the rise as the the economy downturn takes its toll. According to this video on the YouTube, burglaries are happening in areas where crimes used to be rare.

Many residents are taking the proactive step of installing burglar alarm systems to protect their properties and their lives.

While there are no offical statistics on how crimes are faring in Singapore as the result of the current recession, it is probably a good idea to take preventive steps.

Installing a burglar alarm system is a good start. If you are living in a landed property, installing motion triggered lights will help deter crime.

According to Ms Jaslyn Yu, an executive at Chin Hee Works in Defu Lane. which was broken into two months ago, she felt that with the current tough economic times, people are getting more desparate. She said “Maybe more are out of jobs and so resort to theft. We are worried especially during long weekends when the estate is so quiet.”

So what can be done to deter and detect crimes? Installing a burglar alarm system is one good way to deter and detect crimes. A burglar alarm system on activation will sound a siren, attract attention and cause the burglar to cut short the time he spent at your premises. In addtion, if it is either linked to a central monitoring company or to your handphone, it can notified you of an alarm and activate the police.
